State track and field: Class 2A athletes shine, nab 6 individual titles at UNF

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It was a strong start at the state track and field championships in Jacksonville for a host of area athletes.

Boys athletes took three individual titles, while area girls nabbed three more during the Class 1A and 2A meets.

In 2A, Episcopal’s Jake Officer won the 800 in 1:51.87 for the Eagles’ lone individual title on the boys side. For Jackson, Nieko Gaines won the 300 hurdles (53.58), and teammate Joseph Bargeron was runner-up in the 110 hurdles.

Bradford’s Elijah Kellum had a strong showing, winning the triple jump (45-9.75) and taking fourth in the long jump. Raines’ Solomon Thomas (discus), Bolles’ Garrison Butler (shot put) and Suwannee’s Will Wainwright (javelin) all took runner-up honors.

In relays, Bolles won the 400 and took third in the 1600. Bishop Kenny was runner-up in the 1600.

For the girls, the area had three individual champs and a relay winner. Bolles’ Presley Wolfe won the pole vault in 11-3.75 and Yulee’s Tristen Evatt took the title in the long jump (19-11.5). Evatt also finished four in the triple jump. Episcopal’s Brooke McCoy won the 800 (2:11.53), followed closely by Jackson’s Kennedy Hill (2:13.99).

On the girls side, relays were strong. Bishop Kenny won the 3200 relay, while Paxon was second in the 400 and Episcopal was runner-up in the 3200.

For the girls, Paxon’s Kyndal Turner (100), Bishop Kenny’s Emily Wheldon (3200), Bolles’ Wolfe (triple jump), Terrell McCoy (shot put) and Zee Curtis (discus) all took runner-up honors.

In Class 1A, Bishop Snyder’s Kalia Bing won the long jump in 18-8.5. Providence’s Mason Williams was runner-up in the discus.
