I've had personal situations where one of the people has a gun in his hand and just shot the individual. So we run into situations like that where we don't get all the information. A dangerous situation and a bullet proof vest would be good at that point." Situations like the one that played out one year ago in Newtown, Connecticut. Adam Lanza entered a school with an assault rifle, shooting and killing six educators and 20 children. Today the FEMA says bullet proof vests are a smart investment for firefighters who roll-up on shootings like this. One fire department in Texas is already considering the expense. And it could be a costly one. I looked online and found one vest can cost anywhere from $300 up to a thousand dollars. They can also have a short life span, some expiring between 3 to 5 years.Wyse says the association would support the idea under certain conditions.Randy Wyse 073221 "I don't think our policy should change where if it's a known shooter type situation or stabbing or if it's unknown if it's a secure scene, A firefighter should stage far enough away for law enforcement to go in, secure the scene to make sure that it is safe for us to come in and render aid. " 3 So could we see something like this in 3 to 5 years? Wyse says it's possible but before that happens, there would need to be more discussion about financing, and what kind of vest to use, and when to use it. Tim ... firefighters are USED to wearing a LOT of gear when their on the job...Would the bullet proof vest interfere at all with their normal duties?
