Orlando mayor appoints veteran officer to be new police chief
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Orlando is getting a new police chief.
Mayor Buddy Dyer announced Wednesday that current Chief Paul Rooney is retiring and that he is appointing veteran Orlando officer John Mina to replace him.
Mina most recently served as a deputy chief in charge of the patrol section and has been commander of the department's SWAT team. He has been on the force for 23 years.
Rooney, 49, is leaving to become director of security at Valencia College. He became chief three years ago and had been with the department 28 years.
The Orlando commission will vote on the appointment Feb. 24.
