A SCAM ALERT tonight...Authorities are warning of a debt collection scam where the con artist threaten you with jail time if you don't pay a phony bill. People say that they're getting telephone calls from people pretending to be police....but they're really not. Channel 4's Scott Johnson spoke to our crime analyst about how to avoid getting scammed...he's joining us LIVE tonight...Scott? 3 3 0017-2732-3656-1:021:13-1:23 the number is where you would call if you need police... 630-0500... jso's non-emergency line.Well some scammer has programmed their number to show up as JSO's number when they call you. They pretend to be a debt collector and threaten to arrest you if you don't pay up. GARY HARALAMBO 3:04:33 - nothing surprises me, there's more creativity in scamming people than if they turned around and used it for good. They'd have a good job probably.people I talked to were outraged this is going on. 3:05:57 - the older people will pay it, they're afraid and I think that's very sad. but nancy haralambo says she wouldn't fall for it.NANCY HARALAMBO 3:05:18 - I would say you have to come to my house and show me your id. I don't trust anybody on the phone anymore. 'come to the hosue.''.... well they'd have to show me id. They'd have to really prove to me who they are.KATIE ZEBLEY 3:06:57 - I would probably want to see them actually in person. To know who i'm talking to on the phone because you can't trust people on the phone.in fact channel 4 crime analyst ken jefferson says you're well within your rights to do that...to have someone claiming to be a cop on the phone prove who they are. 2:54:04 - if you're ever leery about a call from jso. Always ask for supervisor, always ask for a name. And an id number... 'they legally have to give it to me?' they have to give it to you once you ask for it.the sheriff's office says these are called caller id spoof scams and you don't want to trust caller i-d.2:52:38 - these scammers are very imaginative. Can suppress a number and make it look like sheriff's office.Number two. Sheriff's office is not a debt collector. They're not going to call you to say you owe a debt and if you refuse to pay they're going to arrest you. That's not how they operate. 3 3 scott, are these crooks extremely tech savvy... is it difficult to spoof a caller i-d?
