Tonight -- we're hearing from Duval County school board members - about two fights at local schools -- 3 We showed you videos of both those fights earlier this week-- and tonight we wanted to hear from school board members who have also seen them. The first fight was at First Coast High School last week. A parent sent us the video and told us her son in the white shirt and red shoes was beat up by gang members - the district says it was NOT gang-related. Then yesterday - this disturbing video from Mandarin Middle School - where a student is brutally attacked inside the boys locker room. Tonight we asked board members who represent these districts - what's being done to stop this violence. Tim Pulliam is live tonight at the school board building on the Southbank...Tim? 3 3 3 3 I spoke with the board members who represent the areas where the fights occurred. They say the district has spent money to try to curtail these instances. They also say they need the communities help. This comes as another parent from Mandarin Middle School has come forward saying the school didn't do enough to protect her child. 3 15-20 38-43 1'18-1'23Colleen Guillory/Mom 112115 It's a broken system.Someone needs to fix it.Colleen Guillory says her daughter has been attacked by bullies through out this school year. She says it was so bad, her daughter suffered from depression and was hospitalized for cutting her self on the arms. She says after numerous complaints about the attacks, she said the school finally implemented a safety plan, which included having her daughter escorted to class by an adult. .B ut she says thats done nothing for her daughter- emotionally. 111837 Her heart is broken she thinks she is the ugliest thing on the earth, she's not. She's a beautiful young lady who is crushed by kids who are just very mean. This fight of another child being attacked at Mandarin Middle School is causing concerns for parents like Guillory. The fight happened in Duval County School Board member Jason Fischer's district.Because the fight is still under investigation, he would not comment on the school's response to it. But he says overall, the school district is trying to make kids safer through a new anti-bullying hotline that students and parents can call. He also says The district increased spending on school security from $9 million dollars to $24 million.Jason Ficher/School Board Member 114450 I think in the Mandarin area particularly we have some really safe schools and as a board member, I am doing what they elected me to do which is provide safety at school for our kids. We've had some unfortunately instances but anytime humans are involved, nobody is perfect and sometimes things happen things like this brawl at First Coast High School last week.School Board Member Paula Wright says the fight stemmed from an altercation in the neighborhood that carried over to the school.Paula Wright/School Board Member áá112756 PW: It's my understanding they were just getting off the buses. TP: So where was the school staff or personnel? PW That's one of the questions that I have asked, and my understanding is that teachers were in their classrooms and the staff was there to monitor as much as they can but if you look at that video it's somewhat kind of unfair because the students were kind of blocking the view.112910 Do you 3 That meeting Friday is with the administrators and parents of some of the students involved in the fight. Wright says that the current policy states that when there is a fight at school, everyone involved is disciplined, but she says there is another meeting next week to discuss changing and reviewing that policy among other measures. Tim, did either board member have any guesses as to why we're seeing so many fights?
