3 One week after she was bitten by a shark, Mimi Cosa is opening up about her road to recovery. The 44-year- old was bitten on the foot last Tuesday, and needed 21 stitches. It happened in Jacksonville Beach near 34th Avenue South. Channel 4's Ashley Harding revisited Mimi today, after her follow-up appointment with doctors. Ashley joins us now live from Jacksonville Beach. Ashley, how is Mimi doing? 3 3 The good news is, Mimi Cosa will not need surgery! There had been talks that she would need it...but more than anything, she's just ready to be fully healed so she can go back to the beach...one of the things she loves most. 00-0621-2528:33--28:38 "Dr. Hastings said that it's pretty good, looks good." TRACK That was the news Mimi Cosa had been praying for. One week after a shark bit her on the foot, 21 stitches, and a trip to Baptist Medical Center later ....Cosa is pleased to say she will NOT need surgery. But she says she's more than ready to be able to move on her own. 28:15--28:28 "My husband like carries me up, we go down. I'm like, I'm hungry, I want to go there. I cannot do nothing without their help. But I'm lucky that everybody loves me and takes care of me." TRACK Cosa was spending last Tuesday at the beach with her mother at the time of the attack. Experts believe the guilty party was a small sandbar or dogfish shark. She recalls that moment when she was in the water and realized what had happened.31:32--31:45 "I just felt something bite me. I was thinking it was a crab. It was like, it was sharp. I didn't think it was a shark. But he didn't want to let go, so I said , yeah it's a shark." TRACK Cosa says there were moments when she couldn't feel her pinky toe at all. She also never imagined something like this would happen to her.29:18--29:33 ""When an accident happens, you just like, everything shuts down because you cannot do things. It's like, people think you can do...but it's not true because your blood is flowing down and you feel like the blood comes to your stitches." TRACK Cosa's focus now is getting better, warning others to be careful at the beach, and thanking her lucky stars this injury wasn't worse. More than anything, she's not afraid to get back in the water. She's even got a few words for that shark. 30:28--30:37 "I'll go on the beach and I'll say, where is that shark? Come out. I want to see you. Why did you bite me?" Mimi Cosa tells me her stitches will be removed next week. In the meantime, they just have to watch for infection.
