Used Car Lots Swell Under Zero-Percent Offers

Dealers Expect To Sell Inventory When Deals End

POSTED: 5:31 p.m. EST November 8, 2001

Used car lots are filling up fast and values are plummeting as a record number of new car buyers are driving up the volume of trade-ins.

Dealers say that used-car sales are steady, but haven't nearly kept pace with the growing supply. Some dealers are going to make a sales push on used cars after the no-interest offers for new cars expire.

Minneapolis auto dealer Paul Walser said that used-car inventories are building up and his dealerships are relying on wholesale auctions to relieve some of the pressure.

As trade-in volume is rising, dealers are paying less for used cars.

But many consumers say it's more important to get no-interest financing for a new car than to get more money for the car they already have.
