Safe Sitter class offered to teenagers in Duval County

Safe sitter classes offered at St. Vincent's hospital

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Is your teenager looking for a chance to earn some extra money this summer by babysitting?

A babysitting class will be available Saturday, June 28, to children who are 11 years old and older.

The class is being offered by St. Vincent's hospital and costs $40.  Girls and boys have the opportunity to learn competencies in rescue skills, basic first aid, and safe nurturing childcare.

The class is from 9am to 2:30 p.m.  You do not have to be a patient of St. Vincent's to take the class.  Classes are held in the lobby conference room, in the main lobby of the hospital.

"We teach them things like what to do if a child breaks an arm or gets a cut, do you call 911 or do you call the parent?" said Jennifer Wellman who teaches the class at St. Vincent's hospital.  She says each child gets a bag with a handbook that reminds them how to administer first aid and also has suggestions about how to entertain the child.  Babysitters do not learn CPR.

The class is generally for 11-13 year olds, but Wellman says older teenagers are welcome to take the class as well, just as long as they are at least 11 years old.

To register for the class call 904-308-6359 or click to download the registration form.

Baptist Medical Center Beaches also offers a safe sitter class.  It is $40 and caters to children who are 11-13 years old.  Call Baptist Health's CARE line at 904-202-CARE (2273).
