JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Children's Week is a series of events that highlights programs for children and advocates for the continued needs of children services BOTH on a state and local level. In Jacksonville. Children's Week activities are coordinated by the Jacksonville Kids Coalition and will be celebrated Tuesday March 26.
10:00 a.m.: Count Your Steps for Children Advocacy Walk
Local advocates will count their steps for children's issues beginning at the Landing and walk to City Hall. The walk will be lead by former Jaguars Player Donovin Darius. Children's week will also have Jaxson de Ville and the Boys and Girls Club Drum Line. Local elected officials will also be invited and asked to count the number of steps walked for children. Pedometers will be used to track the total number of steps walked for children's issues. For those interested in joining the walk Daniel Kids will meet in front of the Landing starting at 9:00 AM.
10:30 a.m. news conference
A press briefing and ceremony with a presentation of a proclamation declaring Children's Day throughout the county as well as announcing March 26th as Parents' and Children's Day in the city of Jacksonville. In addition a City Council Resolution co-sponsored by Councilman Ray Holt will be presented. The Keynote Speaker of the Press Conference will be the Superintendent of Schools Nikolai Vitti. Other guests will include members of the City Council.
A hand art display of paper cutouts of children's hands will be decorated by children and will be hung in Jacksonville's City Hall to create an amazing display of children's art as a reminder to the community, legislators and advocates that we must take care of our most precious resource, our children.
After the press conference former Jacksonville Jaguars player Donovin Darius will read a book to area children -- followed by a free book giveaway.
Both the Advocacy Walk and news conference are free and open to the public. Duval County schools will be on spring break families and children are encouraged to join the walk beginning at the Landing at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
This year, Daniel Kids will celebrate Children's Week in Tallahassee April 7 to April 12. On April 7th, the group will have the "Hanging of the Hands" in the Capitol Rotunda. They will hang over 100,000 hands.
Tuesday, April 9th will be the most active day in Tallahassee. It will include hundreds of child advocates and young people from throughout Florida to advocate for children's issues. The Jacksonville Kids Coalition will send over 50 people to meet with their legislators.
