JTA runs diversity campaign in honor of Black History Month

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In honor of Black History Month, News4Jax took a look back to 1955, when any African-American would have been arrested and put in jail for riding in the "white section" of a segregated bus.

Fast forward to 2017 -- JTA wants to remind the public of the many accomplishments African-Americans made before, during and after the civil rights movement.

JTA will have 20 posters at bus stops throughout the city to highlight African-Americans such as Rosa Parks, Wendell Holmes and A. Phillip Randolph.

One JTA bus operator told News4Jax it's great to see African-Americans honored in a place that was segregated decades ago.

"It makes me feel proud that I've been here this long as a black operator to set the path for other operators," the operator said.

JTA said it wants people to get involved by taking a photo with one of the posters and using #JTADiversity, adding that it will also honor other minority groups during their diversity month.
