Protestors rally outside of courthouse in Sanford

Protestors outraged at verdict, demanding justice

SANFORD, Fla. – A day after the controversial not guilty verdict for George Zimmerman came down, some protesters remain in Sanford where the case took place, demanding what they call justice For Trayvon Martin.

The rally was held Sunday afternoon, and among approximately 20 protestors, a few spoke to Local 4 about their frustration and disappointment, and spoke out loudly about what they believe in.

"The system has failed us, the system has failed us!" said one protestor.

Standing not far from where a jury decided George Zimmerman would be set free, the group gathered to show their disgust.

"Justice for Trayvon, he could have been your son!"

Many are the same people who waited anxiously for a verdict Saturday night, disappointed when jurors found Zimmerman not guilty.

"We feel that last night's verdict was an American outrage, an American injustice and a disgrace to our entire nation," said protestor Dave Schneider.

Now, they're demanding justice, saying this is a civil rights case, and no matter what people say, race did play a big part.

"Being black is not a crime!" yelled one person at the rally.

"We want a justice system that actually works as it should," said protestor Lashanett Lorraine. "He's not prosecuted every way he should be prosecuted."

The protesters, who came from all across the state, said they know it's an uphill battle, but it's one they're willing to fight.

"We're here to say that we will continue demanding for justice until we see it and receive it," said Marisol Marquez from the Coalition for Justice for Trayvon Martin.

Over the past few days there have been a lot of people who've sided with George Zimmerman, but ever since the verdict came down, they left, and haven't been at the courthouse since.

Some have said there may possibly be bigger rallies in the near future in front of the Seminole County Criminal Justice Center -- ones that may include some big names.
