Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, officials said.

Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

To date, there have been no reports indicating that these products have caused any illness, officials said.

The products being recalled are listed below and were distributed to retail outlets, including food service accounts and supermarkets, in the U.S. Consumers can find code and use-by dates on the top of each package:

Officials said the potential for contamination was discovered when a routine, random sample collected at a retail location on March 30 by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

Consumers who have purchased any of the products are urged to dispose of it or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with any questions may call toll-free 888-957-2272, Monday-Friday 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
