Be careful when giving your employees their annual review. New research shows that a critical evaluation may get the opposite result you want.
Researchers from Kansas State University, Eastern Kentucky University and Texas A&M surveyed more than 200 employees who had just received their performance review. They found that even people who are looking for ways to improve their job don't like hearing negative feedback.
Here are some helpful hints for a review with a better outcome:
- Focus on constructive feedback instead negative comments.
- Stay away from using a numbering scale because everyone views the numbers differently.
- Avoid the sandwich approach-where you squeeze negative feedback in between two compliments.
- Consider making the review an ongoing process instead of just meeting once a year.
