Frozen vegetables recalled over listeria risk

Barberi International, Inc., recalls Sunmba Frozen Ajaico

Miami, Fla. – A frozen vegetable combination used in a traditional South American soup is being recalled by the manufacturer due to possible listeria contamination.

Barberi International, a Miami-based company, is recalling its Sunmba Frozen Ajiaco product.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism, that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The Sunmba Frozen Ajiaco vegetable mix product being recalled was sold in 2 pound plastic bags with UPC number 85641400172 and a “use by” date of Nov. 5, 2017, or earlier. The product was distributed to stores in Florida  between December 24, 2016 and January 22, 2017.

Listeria monocytogenes was discovered in the Sunmba Frozen Ajiaco after Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services product testing. No other Barberi International food items are affected by the recall.

To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this product.

Customers who purchased this product should discard it or return it to their local store for a full refund.
