There are nearly 50 active construction projects in the Jacksonville area..but one of them is at a standstill. Work on the I-295 and Commonwealth interchange started in January 2013... but it ran into some trouble a few months ago. We got calls from people who travel the area. They're concerned about the work stoppage. We sent Channel 4's Ashley Mitchem to find out what happened. 3 3 00-0508-1528-3245-52Mickey Leyva, Driver 06:40 we need to get something out here done and get it started and completed because there isn't nobody out here to finish itDrivers are frustrated ...a construction project that was supposed to be over by now is not even close to being finished because of finances. The original contractor's bonding company is working with DOT to get a new contractor pre-qualified for the work- but they aren't sure how long it will take to get the new contractor started on the project.Ron Tittle, Florida Department of Transportation 51:22 What the Florida department of transportation is doing right now is looking at the temporary fixes. We got a call for pot holes and things that may be out here and safety issues, and we will certainly work on those.) We drove out to investigate the area and it was a bumpy ride...drivers say they hope those bumps and pot holes are fixed during the project.Stephen Hurst, Driver 03:54 There's a lot of timber trucks and a lot of semi trucks going up and down my road and they are tearing up the road it's getting bad but they are trying to keep up with it.FDOT doesn't know is they will incur additional costs due to the delay, but some of the costs are being absorbed by the original contractor's bonding company. The original contract days were set for about a year...so by the time the contractor defaulted in March 2014 they were already behind on the finishing schedule. They original contractor- Southern Development Corporation Bonding Company was going to get paid $3.3 million for the job...and this point they've already received $2 million dollars.AM C4 TLS.
