Mascots' Trip To Give High-Tech Lessons In Ancient Culture

POSTED: Tuesday, September 25, 2007

Technology is helping students at one local school feel like world travelers.

Teachers from San Jose Episcopal Day School are about to head abroad for a week. Instead of just bringing back stories and pictures about their educational trip, kids will get to follow along while they're there -- both in and out of the classroom.

Students at the school may not officially be world travelers, but thanks to the Internet, they will feel like it. For the second year in a row some lucky teachers and the school mascot will travel overseas. Last year, it was China -- this fall it's Egypt.

They will feel that way thanks in part to a daily blog that kids will get to follow. The traveling teachers will keep a daily diary of what they encounter. Students will then get to discuss what's universal and what's different.

The school's mascot, Jose the Bear, is going along for the ride also.

Last year, Jose posed on the Great Wall of China, dressed as a Chinese warrior. He frolicked around Hong Kong. Students at the school -- pre-K through sixth grade grade -- were able to keep track of his trip through the pictures posted online.

They will do the same thing this year when Jose puts another stamp on his passport.

If you'd like to keep track of the teachers and Jose the Bear, log on to: SJEDS.com/blog/egypt/.
