JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- For the fifth time in five years, two Duval County schools are ranked in the top 10 of public high schools in America, according to an annual survey by Newsweek magazine.
Stanton College Prep was ranked fifth on the magazine's list of the nation's 1,300 best schools in 2008, with Paxon School for Advanced Studies capturing the eighth spot.
Eighteen Florida schools were ranked in the magazine's top 100, based on the number of advanced placement, International Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students at the school in 2007 divided by the number of graduating seniors.
The top schools survey is reported in Newsweek's May 26 edition.
BASIS Charter in Tucson, Ariz., was No. 1 in the survey, with Suncoast Community School in Riviera Beach -- at No. 3 -- the top Florida school.
Nease High School in Ponte Vedra/Palm Valley was ranked 89th. Mandarin High came in at 151, with Douglas Anderson School of the Arts at 176. St. Johns County's Bartram Trail High School was ranked 319th.
Last year, Newsweek's competitor, U.S. News and World Report, did its own rankings of top high schools, with Stanton coming in at No. 9 and Paxon at No. 30.
