Board To Vote On Changing Name Of Forrest High School

POSTED: Wednesday, October 22, 2008

After years of controversy, the Duval County School Board has scheduled a vote on whether to rename Nathan Bedford Forrest High School.

The board on Tuesday set a period of public comment on the name followed by a vote at their Nov. 3 meeting on the name of the school, named for a former Confederate general who was the first grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.

The school's name has come under fire several times over the years by critics who said it is inappropriate for a public school to still be named for someone with ties to a racist organization.

Last year, an advisory council at the school voted 8-6 to rename it.

Some have proposed renaming the school for Navy Lt. Cmdr. Scott Speicher, a Forrest graduate and the only American military person sill missing from the first Gulf War.
