Students Arrested After Trying To Tape Teacher To Chair

POSTED: 8:05 a.m. EDT May 19, 2004

They thought it was a prank, but now five high school students in Kansas City are facing jail time and fines. Park Hill students arrested after incident

The students have been charged with assault for allegedly trying to tape a teacher at Park Hill High School to a chair during the last week of school.

A prosecutor said no one was hurt in the incident. But he said the students continued joking about it, even after they had been handcuffed and were being led to jail.

"When students flaunt authority to the point that a police officer must get involved, the matter ceases to become a simple school discipline matter and becomes an issue that the entire community must confront," prosecutor Eric Zahnd said in a press release.

"The fact that the students continued joking about the event, even after they were handcuffed and being led to jail, shows a distressing lack of respect for school and police authorities," Zahnd said.

Joseph L. Blankenship, 18 of Kansas City; Dexter Briscoe, 18, of Kansas City; Trevor Hachman, 18, of Weatherby Lake; Daniel M. Ikona, 19, of Kansas City; and Matthew T. Mayfield, 18, of Kansas City are charged with third-degree assault.

On May 11, the five students allegedly restrained a teacher and attempted to use packaging tape to tape him to a chair. The teacher broke free. He was not hurt.

The teacher reported the incident and the Platte County Sheriff's Department arrested the students.

Each student faces up to 15 days in jail and a $300 fine for the misdemeanor charge of third-degree assault.

All five were barred from graduation ceremonies.
