Education chair wants study of school funding

The chairwoman of the Senate Education Committee filed a proposal Wednesday that would require a study of a key component of Florida's school-funding formula.

The proposal (SB 1394), filed by Sen. Dorothy Hukill, R-Port Orange, would require a study of what is known as the "district cost differential" -- long a controversial issue in the state's formula for distributing money to school districts.

The district cost differential is designed to take into account variances in costs of living across the state, but critics have questioned its fairness.

Hukill's bill, filed for the legislative session that starts Tuesday, would require the state Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government Accountability, or OPPAGA, to conduct a study and provide recommendations about whether the district cost differential should be eliminated or whether changes should be made.
