JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Parents of Duval County students may soon be able to track their children in real-time, from when they get on the bus to when they buy lunch, if the school district moves to a new student identification system.
Duval County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Nikolai presented the comprehensive plan to centralize school IDs to the school board during a meeting Tuesday.

School officials believe the districtwide ID management system keeps closer tabs on students to provide better communication and better safety.
The new ID cards would be standard for every school. Currently, they vary from one school to the next.
The idea is to have a standard card that's synced to the district’s data system. They’ll be used to take attendance, making that easier on faculty.
The ID can function as a sort of debit card for lunch payments.
Students can also be tracked when they get on the bus
"That's helpful for us to determine ridership and that’s more efficient to determine costs, routes and how many kids are on routes and if we should discontinue routes or expand routes and allows us to communicate with parents if buses are late, which is something parents have been asking for, for quite some time," Vitti said.
In the end, Vitti said, the new IDs will save the district money.
It's unclear at this point when the upgrades will be made.
