Trump budget cuts include program affecting military kids

Schools would no longer get payments for students from military families

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – While President Donald Trump fulfilled a major campaign promise this week, proposing a $4.1 trillion budget plan that includes aggressive cuts, some of the cuts will hit close to home for Northeast Florida students.

One of Trump's proposals is eliminating Impact Aid Payments to school districts. The program is designed to help children whose parents are in the military by compensating schools districts that lose out on property taxes because they have many students from military families.

Last year, Duval County Public Schools was awarded $2.5 million though the federal program, which will be distributed in $500,000 installments over a five-year period among six schools based on their percentage of federally-connected children.

School officials said the district would be eligible for $6.25 million for the next school year, which would be divided among eight schools, but that money might not materialized if it is cut from the budget.
