Professor Wrestling: 'Cyber Sunday' Results

Text, Web Votes Shape PPV

POSTED: Friday, October 24, 2008
UPDATED: 11:12 pm EDT October 26, 2008

Listen up!

Class is in session.

WWE's "Cyber Sunday" is history, kids. That's the pay-per-view where you decide -- by texting or Web votes -- who does what in all the matches on the card.

With that in mind, here's what happened:

Podcast: 'Old School, New School' -- Episode 90

U.S. Championship Match: Shelton Benjamin (c) vs. R-Truth OR MVP OR Festus
What Should Happen: Personally, I'd like to see Festus. Truth and MVP bore me to tears. Truth isn't engaging and MVP has jobbed too many times lately to be taken seriously.

What Will Happen: Benjamin will wrestle against R-Truth, who will lose to the champ.

What Did Happen: Benjamin beath R-Truth to retain his title.

Triple Choice Tag Team Match: Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase vs. C.M. Punk and Kofi Kingston OR John Morrison and The Miz vs. Cryme Tyme OR Jamie Noble and Mickie James vs. William Regal and Layla
What Should Happen: WWE wants to give us the tepid Morrison and Miz versus the unfunny Cryme Tyme team. No one wants to see the mixed tag match. Hopefully we'll see Rhodes and DiBiase versus Punk and Kingston, which could be a really good segment. If the latter happens, you have to keep the belts on the bad guys.

What Will Happen: We'll see Rhodes pinning Kingston.

What Did Happen: The fans picked the Morrison/Miz vs. Cryme Tyme match. The M&M team won.

One Year Ago: 'Cyber Sunday' 2007 Results

Intercontinental Championship Match: Santino Marella (c) vs. Goldust OR Roddy Piper OR The Honky Tonk Man
What Should Happen: No one wants to see Goldy or Piper. Santino has been chiding HTM for weeks, so this is a no-brainer. It will be delightful to see Santino get brained with one of Honky's guitars.

What Will Happen: El Kabong! Honky loses to Santino, but the Italian guy will get brained first.

What Did Happen: Honky Tonk man won by DQ, so Santino keeps his title.

ECW Championship Match: Matt Hardy (c) vs. Mark Henry OR Finlay OR Evan Bourne
What Should Happen: If Henry gets this match, you know the voting is rigged. No one in their right mind wants to see Henry in the ring. The choice should be Evan Bourne. That would make for a good match, with Hardy winning a spot-fest.

What Will Happen: Hardy will pin Bourne cleanly.

What Did Happen: Hardy pinned Bourne cleanly.

Challenge Match: Kane vs. Rey Mysterio
What Should Happen: In this one, fans can vote for a Falls Count Anywhere match, a No Holds Barred match or a Two-Out-Of-Three Falls match. I'd add a fourth option: This Has To Be The Last Meeting Between These Two match. Face it, this program has been another misuse of Mysterio. He should be in the top tier, slugging it out for the championship gold. He's slumming with Kane when he should be putting on four-star matches.

What Will Happen: Mysterio will win a No Holds Barred match.

What Did Happen: Mysterio won a No Holds Barred match.

Challenge Match: Undertaker vs. Big Show
What Should Happen: Fans will be voting for an I Quit match, a Last Man Standing match or a Knockout match. Since this current program is boxing-based, I have a hard time thinking the KO option won't be in play. On that end, I'd like to see Show clobber Taker. It's high time UT got knocked down a peg or two in a PPV.

What Will Happen: Big Show will knock out the Deadman.

What Did Happen: It was a Last Man Standing match, and Undertaker won it.

WWE Championship Match: Hunter Hearst Helmsley (c) vs. Jeff Hardy OR Vladimir Kozlov OR Both
What Should Happen: The smart money says this will be a Triple Threat match, but I think it should be Kozlov one-on-one with HHH. May as well cut to the chase, because WWE is never going to let Jeff wear the gold anyway. So why pretend it might happen?

What Will Happen: HHH retains his belt by pinning Hardy in a Triple Threat match.

What Did Happen: The fans voted for Hardy taking on HHH, and Trips won it.

World Heavyweight Championship Match: Chris Jericho (c) vs. Batista
What Should Happen: Fans will vote for a special referee in this one: Steve Austin, Randy Orton or Shawn Michaels. I have the feeling fans will pick Austin, but that's not what you'll see on TV. No matter what, Michaels will be the zebra, and should try to screw it up for Jericho as much as possible. That sets up a Triple Threat affair with Batista in the mix at the next WWE PPV.

What Will Happen: Jericho retains, despite the interference of ref HBK.

What Did Happen: Batista win his belt back, as ref Stone Cold Steve Austin made the three-count.

That’ll do it. This time around, I'm awarding myself a half-point for correctly guessing the match, and another half-point for getting the result right. So the final score: four points for correct guesses out of a possible eight points. Man, I'm good.
