The spotlight of the music world was shining on Ford Field this weekend as Detroit welcomed The Eminem Show.
Fans from across the country and from across the world filled the stadium in two sold-out shows Saturday and Sunday, bringing more than 90,000 people to Ford Field -- the home of the Detroit Lions -- to see Eminem. The rap star brought down the Detroit Lions' house in his only two North American shows this summer.
Eminem's hometown of Detroit was well represented in the crowd, as fans were adorned with Pistons jerseys, Made In Detroit T-shirts and Tigers' ball caps with the classic "D" emblem.
A preshow video included Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick featured in a skit with Eminem where the mayor personally persuades Eminem to play a show in the Motor City, since the rapper's current tour was scheduled in overseas dates only. In true Eminem style, the video cut to the aloof rap star putting the mayor on hold as he headed out to a hotel balcony.
The balcony scene, of course, edits into a clip from several weeks ago where Eminem dangled a baby doll outside a Scotland hotel window in a spoof of Michael Jackson's infamous baby-dangling episode.
The video then cut back to Eminem getting back to his phone call with the mayor to work out a deal to schedule a Detroit performance, and includes Eminem giving the mayor a special invite for a party at his "mansion." The line elicited laughter from those in the crowd who were hip to local news reports about a recent investigation into rumors of a wild party at the mayor's Manoogian Mansion. (The state attorney general deemed the rumors to be nothing but the stuff of "urban legends.")
The video then showed Eminem heading back to Detroit to get ready for the concert where he was picked up in a Hummer driven by another Detroit musician, Kid Rock.
The Hummer arrived at its destination on screen and headlights appeared as the actual vehicle rolled onto Ford Field. Eminem jumped out and then it was on with the show.
The carnival-themed stage was made complete by a moving Ferris wheel and fireworks with a lighted "The Eminem Show" sign above the stage created to resemble a circus big top.
Joining Eminem on stage throughout the evening were proteges D12, Obie Trice and opener 50 Cent. 50 Cent's opening performance warmed up the Detroit crowd with a New York theme bringing the Statue of Liberty to the Motor City. Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot showed Detroit what female rappers are made of as she performed her opening set. Elliot -- sporting a No. 33 Magic Johnson Michigan State jersey -- and her dancers got the crowd moving with their hip-hop energy.
Eminem performed a variety of his songs, but the crowd went wild for hits such as "Stan," "Kill You," "White America," "Cleanin' Out My Closet," and "Without Me."
But he brought down the house, or trailer park, when a revolving "8 Mile Road Mobile Court" sign was lowered over the main-floor crowd. Fans erupted into a sing-along as he performed the Oscar-winning "Lose Yourself" and hometown landmark "8 Mile" from his film of the same name.
And the show didn't end without another special guest joining Eminem's performance. The often heard about -- but rarely seen -- child of Eminem joined her dad for a rap session. Although Hailie Jade did not make an appearance, an animated, pig-tailed tyke joined Eminem on large screens set against the back of the stage.
The song "My Dad's Gone Crazy" features sound bites of the little girl asking somebody to "please help" her daddy.
The show was not without its flaws as a few technical difficulties were noticeable Saturday night, and the troubled acoustics in Ford Field made the performance appear somewhat muffled.
Overall, fans were treated to more than 90 minutes each night of nonstop hits and energy by the hometown rapper. The crowd cheered each time Eminem made a reference to the Motor City.
And fans I talked to from out-of-state said they felt at home during the Detroit performance.
So it was that the homeboy from Detroit who decided to stay put for the summer to be closer to his daughter and his recording studio ended up throwing the biggest party Detroit would see in quite some time.
