"Parks and Recreation's" Rashida Jones refuses to be typecast.

The star and co-screenwriter of "Celeste and Jesse Forever" told the New York Times she wanted to play a role other than the "dependable, affable, loving, friend-wife-girlfriend" -- so she wrote a part for herself.

"I felt like this was the only opportunity I had to play this kind of part - a character that's maybe less than likable," the 36-year-old actress said of her labor of love, which was reportedly made for less than $1 million in just 23 days.

Jones said her passion for the role - a woman in the midst of divorce - led her to turn down an offer from a studio that wanted the right to "cast somebody else if they felt like I wasn't financially viable."

But, like she told the Times, who better to tell a story inspired by her own love life than her? The actress and Will McCormack - who also appears in "Celeste and Jesse Forever" -- co-wrote the film using details from their own two-week relationship-turned-friendship.

The dramedy, which marks Jones' screenwriting debut, hits theaters on Friday.
