More top movies filmed in Georgia than anywhere else, study shows

17 of 100 highest-performing films last year were made in Georgia

ATLANTA – A new study released this month revealed that of the 100 highest-performing films released in the U.S. last year, 17 were made in Georgia -- more than any other top location, including California.

The nonprofit group FilmL.A. analyzed the top films in 2016 based on how much it cost to make the films and how much was actually spent in the locations.

Georgia's 17 films came in at $950.2 million in budget with $476.4 million in production spending to the state. California had 12 films in the top 100 with a total of $991 million in budget and $851.2 million in production spending to the state.

Louisiana also made the top five on production center locations in the study with six films at $406 million in budget and $318 million in production spending to the state.

The United Kingdom (16 films) and Canada (13 films) were also in the top five locations.

Some of the report’s other findings include:

  • The 100 films studied by FilmL.A. represent over $7.5 billion in direct production spending. Budgets for these films ranged from $3.5 million to over $300 million.
  • From a national perspective, the US hosted 57 percent of the top 100 films, which is the lowest share in the past four years. From 2013-2015, the US production share for the top 100 films ranged from 63-67 percent.
  • Film incentive availability continues to drive location choice for feature film production and post-production including VFX and music scoring. Exact incentive award amounts were available for 37 films in the study -- valued at $596 million in the aggregate.

According to WSB-TV in Atlanta, Georgia offered over $600 million to production companies just last year through its film incentive program.

The 17 Georgia films in the study were:
