Lacking Funds, St. Johns Humane Society To Close

POSTED: Thursday, October 9, 2008

Workers at the Florida East Coast Humane Society are doing their best to find homes for about 100 animals as quickly as possible as the organization is out of money and plans to shut down -- at least temporarily -- at the end of October.

"It's heartbreaking for us," said Cindy Bishop, director of the no-kill shelter serving St. Augustine for the past 4½ years.

Bishop said their budget has always been tight -- last month they announced they could no longer accept strays -- but it's never been this bad.

"We don't get any funding from government agencies or national organizations," Bishop said. "All the money that's donated to us stays within our community. So when the people in our community are hurting, necessarily, we are too."

While trying to find homes for the animals, the 12 employees are also trying to find new jobs.

The dogs, cats and even rabbits must either be adopted out in the next three weeks or be sent to other animal shelters.

Linda Robinson went to the shelter Thursday to adopt a cat and was surprised to learn the operation was closing.

"(The animals) can't talk for themselves," Robinson said. "They need somebody to help them."

Bishop said that as word gets out about the humane society's funding crisis, people are trying to help.

"We've had a lot of people coming in and adopting, a lot of people calling to do fundraising for us," Bishop told Channel 4's Dan Leveton. "We're so excited ... people dropping off bags of food, we are so blessed to have the community we have."

Anyone who can adopt a pet is asked to call 912-829-2737 or go online to FECHS.org.
