Childhood checkups are changing to include new tests

Checkups to include tests for HIV, cholesterol, depression

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL – HIV.  Cholesterol.  Depression.

All three may soon be on the checklist at your child's regular physical exam.

The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends that teens be screened for depression.

Pediatricians say teens should also receive an HIV test at least once between the ages of 16 and 18.

For children, the organization recommends kids start having their cholesterol checked once between 9 and 11-years-old.

Doctors say all kids should receive the test regardless of family history of heart disease.

The AAP says the goal is to help kids grow up healthier.
