JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A biology professor at Edward Waters College will join with a research group at the University of Florida to create a program that will help minorities quit their tobacco addictions, the college has announced.
Professor Prabir K. Mandal is one of three researchers on the project, which is funded by a $1.6 million grant from the Florida Department of Health, who will focus on the Florida's minority populations.

The grant was awarded to the University of Florida to create a tobacco cessation program to battle tobacco-induced cancer and cardiovascular disease.
According to Florida DOH, lung cancer is the leading cause of all cancer-related deaths and is the most common tobacco-related cancer.
UF's project, funded by DOH's James and Esther King Biomedical Research Program, is significant because it will increase enrollment of vulnerable populations in research studies to better understand ways of improving health outcomes for everyone in Florida.
Mandal, who will serve on the OneFlorida Executive Committee, will work to improve the care of patients with tobacco-related illnesses by testing new ways of provident treatment in real-world clinical settings as part of the Pragmatic Trials and Implementation Science Minority Education Program.
