One of the biggest complaints people make when it comes to exercising is not having enough time to do it. But there are some ways to squeeze a workout in even on your busiest days. Cleveland Clinic Fitness Instructor Melissa Hendricks says the key is to combine a number of different exercises in a short amount of time.
"So, you're doing lower body, upper body, and cardio within the same routine without taking rests in between and I think that's the biggest thing, a lot of times when you're working out you're taking long periods of rest in-between your exercises," said Hendricks.
She says more and more research shows short, intense exercise can boost your metabolism and fight weight gain. Putting together your own routine is fine, as long as it's a mix of cardio and strength training. For example, in 7 to 10 minutes combine things like squats and shoulder presses with dumbbells, or squats with marching to get some cardio work, too. But if you can't find 10 minutes to get a quick workout in, you can also try mixing it into your leisure time.
"When you're watching your TV, even during the commercials, commercials at a minute to 2 minutes long- get up and do some type of activity," said Hendricks. "Whether it's holding a plank for the commercial time, or march, or jump rope, or do whatever you can during that time, you're going to see a huge difference."
Hendricks says you can even get the family involved by having everybody pick a different exercise to do during each commercial break.
