JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

More than 50 people, including first responders and community leaders, helped Memorial Hospital break ground Monday for its new free-standing emergency room facility on Atlantic at Kernan boulevards.

The 10-bed, 9,000-square-foot facility will be located in front of the Kohl’s Department Store at the intersection and is slated to open next spring as Memorials second free-standing ER. Construction is set to begin later this year.

The facility will be a full-service, state-licensed emergency room and will operate just like an ER that is attached to a hospital. It will also have a dedicated pediatrics area.

In October 2012, Memorial opened its first freestanding emergency center in Julington Creek. Since opening, the Julington Creek location has seen thousands of patients and its physicians have treated everything from broken bones to heart attacks.
