Super Bowl parties and healthy foods generally don't mix. The trick is to find ways to cut the fat and calories out of some of your traditional party staples without changing the taste.
Cleveland Clinic Registered Dietitian Kristin Kirkpatrick says one of the first things you can do is to pass on cheese dips.
"Instead, think of dips like hummus. Hummus is just chick peas with tahini. It's very healthy for us. You can make an edamame hummus with soybean, which is actually very delicious," she suggested.
Kirkpatrick says salsa and guacomole are also good choices for dips. You can make your own salsa with healthy, fresh ingredients and guacomole contains healthy mono-unsaturated fats.
You can also boot the all-beef burgers for healthier options like turkey or tuna burgers. Or go with a plant-based burger like lentil or veggie burgers. And what's a super bowl party without wings?
"One of the worst things about wings is that they are typically breaded and fried. So, you can get small drumsticks, you can marinate in some olive oil and some great herbs and you can actually bake them. They'll still be delicious," she said.
Kirkpatrick says dark chocolate is a dessert choice that is sure to score with your guests. She recommends adding some fruit to dip too. You'll not only reap the health benefits from the fruit, but the dark chocolate will provide heart healthy benefits as well.
