Increase in flu activity and a nasty stomach bug spreading

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – By now you've probably heard just how widespread the flu is this season. However, doctors say that's not the only thing that's spreading this week.

Doctors are not only urging people to get their flu vaccines, this week, a nasty stomach bug is spreading just as fast.

At the CareSpot on the Southside in Duval County, flu remains the number one problem. They've been swamped with up to 25 patients a day testing positive for the virus. Most of the patients have not had their flu shot. Doctors are also seeing what they call the 'Jacksonville Crud'- it's flu-like symptoms with severe congestion, a sore throat and a headache. UTI's have also spiked this week.

In Clay County at the CareSpot in Middleburg, the staff says the bottom line is to get your flu shot. People have been calling out from work and kids have been pulled out of school because of the flu.

In Nassau County at the CareSpot in Yulee, at least six to seven patients have been testing positive for the flu- that's a significant increase compared to previous weeks. The staff says they've seen a number people sick with a viral stomach bug as well.

In St. Johns County at CareSpot in St. Augustine, the office staff says they're seeing symptoms similar to the stomach flu but without diarrhea. Patients have nausea, vomiting, body aches and a low grade fever. Doctors don't know what's causing it but they believe it may be viral.

The symptoms can spread quickly which is why avoiding close contact can protect you and those around you. If you do get it, stay home for 48-72 hours after your symptoms go away.

Wash your hands often and try not to prepare food for anyone else. Stay hydrated and drink liquids with low amounts of salt and sugar. If you're having trouble keeping down fluids, try Pedialyte or Gatorade to prevent dehydration. Stick to the BRAT diet-Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast. This will give your stomach a chance to rest while also getting your nutrients
