Yoga can help you keep your New Year's resolution

If you're putting together a list of new year resolutions, you may want to include yoga. Judi Bar, a certified yoga teacher and trainer at Cleveland Clinic's Wellness Institute, says you can use yoga poses to keep the rest of your resolutions on track.

"When we practice yoga it brings us into the moment," Bar explained. "You know, if we're standing on one foot or we're bending backwards or we're in a little bit of an odd position we have to be in the moment."

Bar says if you're trying to break a bad habit in 2014 you can use yoga to create willpower. Ffor example, of you're trying to eat better, but one day decide to grab a donut, Bar says stop and strike a pose.

It will bring you into the moment and help you to be more mindful of your decision. She says your mind must come off the donut because you have to focus on the pose.  This can gradually build your will-power.

"We stop and say what else can I do for myself that makes me healthy? Drink some water, take a walk, maybe have a piece of fruit- make another choice," said Bar.

Bar says even something as simple as stopping and taking a deep breath can clear your head and help you to make better decisions.  She says you must practice these yoga techniques to get better at them, so don't expect them to work overnight.
