Man accused of stealing, selling brains

Brain tissue taken from Indiana Medical History Museum was sold on eBay

INDIANAPOLIS (WXIN)A man accused of stealing brains from the Indiana Medical History Museum and selling them online now faces additional charges.

Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry announced new charges Monday against David Charles, who was previously charged in December in connection with a break-in at the Indianapolis museum. Curry said Charles now faces two additional counts of burglary and an additional count of theft following separate break-ins at the museum.

According to investigators, a crime scene specialist recovered multiple pieces of evidence linking Charles to the crime scene, including a white piece of paper with Charles' bloody fingerprint. He's accused of breaking into the museum on multiple occasions to steal jars of human brain tissue and other human tissue.

Stolen items sold on eBay were recovered when the buyer became suspicious of their origins after seeing online reports about the stolen items. Police later found a Facebook post in which Charles said he had "a bunch of human brains in jars for sale."

Indianapolis Metropolitan police expressed dismay and disbelief when asked about the case back in December.

"This consumer did his due diligence and saw they were possibly stolen and contacted us," said Officer Chris Wilburn. "I mean, he was trying to sell six jars of human brain matter… it's very bizarre."

Charles was arrested on Dec. 16, 2013. He was due in court Monday on the new charges.
