Local Gas Prices Top $4

POSTED: Tuesday, May 13, 2008

As gas prices continue to rise, the price per gallon at some stations in the Jacksonville area have surpassed $4 per gallon.

The price posted at a BP gas station in South Mandarin is not a mistake -- premium gas there is selling for $4.09 per gallon.

Now that gas has started to creep past the price threshold of $4, traffic isn't the only thing on the minds of drivers who commute every day from places like St. Augustine or Middleburg to Jacksonville.

Some residents told Channel 4 the skyrocketing gas prices have begun to seriously affect their budgets.

"They're horrible -- horrible," said one driver.

Some drivers said it cost as much as $80 to fill up their rides. Another said it cost him $100.

"We have to look at our finances harder. We used to not look at gas or budget the gas. Now we do have to budget," one driver explained.

Most drivers told Channel 4 they have started budgeting gas.

One driver said his daily commute from St. Augustine to Jacksonville runs about $50 every four days. He said last year he spent about $35 for same number of days.

"That's really ridiculous, but what can you do about it?" said Joe Sorells.

He said his wife typically commutes in their SUV and often treks from South Mandarin to Normandy. They put $100 in their SUV every few days.

"I got a daughter in college. I got two others in school, and believe me with the cost of that it's enough," Sorells said.

Jimmy Schultz runs a lawn service. He said the cost of gas is making running his business more difficult by the day.

"$30 a day for the truck, and probably about another $20 a day for the equipment," Schultz said.

That means he's spending close to $350 more each month for gas than he did a year ago.

"With the gas prices like they are now, I don't know, I might have to start riding a bicycle," Sorells said.
