While Auto Sales Tank, Port Moves Record Number Of Cars
Increase In Used-Car Exports Fills Gap

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- After U.S. auto sales plunged 37 percent in November to their worst level in more than 26 years, there are hundreds of unsold cars sitting on lots at Jacksonville Port Authority.
Toyota -- with a major processing facility in Jacksonville -- saw sales tumble 34 percent.
That means fewer cars are arriving on docks in Jacksonville and the ones on the docks not moving out.
"The importers tell me, yes, they have had more cars then they'd like on the lot," Jaxport spokeswoman Nancy Rubin said. "They are adjusting production schedules and being aggressive in their sales to deal with some of the economic conditions that individual purchasers have been dealing with."
Despite fewer auto imports, Jaxport said used-car exports are way up.
The port is shipping out hundreds of used American cars and construction equipment to growing markets overseas. Jaxport is second to only the port of New York in the most cars handled in the past year.
"A record-setting year for Jaxport, as far as auto handling," Rubin said.
So while the car companies and customers may feel the pinch, the port of Jacksonville has adjusted to the shifting demand and is prospering.
