NEW YORK -- Martha Stewart is hoping for a probation-only sentence, according to a newspaper report.
After failing to get a new trial for their client, Stewart's legal team readied a request for a probation-only sentence to present to U.S. District Judge Miriam Goldman Cedarbaum when the designing diva is sentenced Friday in federal court on conspiracy and obstruction of justice convictions, the New York Daily News reported.
Last week, Cedarbaum denied Stewart's second request for a new trial, setting the stage for Friday's sentencing.Stewart and her former broker are considered likely to get 10 to 16 months each in prison for obstructing a federal probe into suspicious stock sales.According to the Daily News, a review of Cedarbaum's decisions found that at least twice she has rejected requests by convicted felons hoping for leniency in sentencing.Stewart has also reportedly asked to lighten her jail term by spending up to 20 hours a week teaching poor women how to start their own businesses. Newsweek reported that Stewart has offered to work up to 1,000 hours for Women's Venture Fund, a nonprofit organization based in New York. The magazine reported that after meeting with Stewart, that group's president wrote to Cedarbaum about how Stewart's instruction could benefit underprivileged women.
