Consumers Put Trash Bags To Test

Are you tired of having your trash bag burst before you reach the curb?

The new Glad Force Flex Trash Bag says it can stretch to prevent punctures or rips.

KETV in Omaha put the bags to the test against a standard Target brand bag.

Consumer Mary Stanek said she would help test to find out if the claim was true. In the first test, Stanek pushed a coat hanger into the sides of the bags.

"I think (the Target bag is) tougher than Glad," Stanek said.

For test No. 2, Stanek took out the trash. Each bag was stuffed full. The Glad bag developed a few small holes, but didn't break when shaken. The same load was transferred to the Target bag, which didn't produce any holes.

Finally, Stanek posed a wet-weight test. Eight gallons of water -- 66 pounds -- was poured into each bag. Again, the Target bag performed better.

The television station asked Stanek for her overall assessment.

"Target," Stanek said. "I really am (surprised) because I've always used Glad."

Twenty Glad bags cost $3.49 and 22 Target bags cost $1.85.
