Pentagon adopting local gym's techniques
Mayport gym uses unique military techniques as functional fitness
Trainers at a Mayport gym have a big task ahead of them.
They just secured a federal contract with the Department of Defense to teach new fitness techniques to Pentagon employees.
Those at 324 Gym off Edgar Road teach untraditional techniques to get extraordinary results.
Channel 4's Vic Micolucci visited the gym, took part in a couple of the exercises, and survived them to tell their story.
The people working out at 324 Gym might look like construction workers when they are moving tires and lifting heavy blocks of cement, but their not. They are just participating in functional fitness.
But their fitness is different from traditional workout routines. Now, the out of the norm techniques taught at this Mayport gym are being used by the US Department of Defense for Pentagon employees.
"The workouts that are utilized at the Pentagon are basically from the same template that 324 has established. What we've learned works. We're now applying that in that facility as well," Jason Haines said.
Haines is one of the owners of 324 Gym. He and the others are former military, and have designed these high-intensity workouts based on their years of experience.
He said securing a contract with the Pentagon is an honor.
"I just think it's a statement regarding the effectiveness of what we've put together," Haines said.
"It's not meant for you to breeze by at any level. It pushes you to your personal limits," Joseph Thompson said, a member of 324.
While many who workout here are at the top of their game athletically, and even they were winded and exhausted, the instructors said most of the exercises just take some practice, and a willingness to keep pushing on.
"You don't necessarily have to be an elite athlete. You don't have to have any background," Haines said.
Thompson added, "Especially coming from my background, former military, it's good to see people are noticing the benefits of this type of workout."
