Roaches, raw sewage prompt 3 restaurant closures

Roaches in refrigerator, on the cook-line, raw sewage temporarily shut down 3 local restaurants

JACKSONVILLE, Fla – Two restaurants were closed because of roaches and another because of raw sewage on on the kitchen floor last week.

The Zaxby's on County Road 220 in Orange Park was closed for the night because of only one high priority violation.  The inspector came in the evening last week and wrote he found four live roaches on the wall under the cash register at the drive-thru window.  Close to a dozen more along the bottom and inside of a cabinet in the same area.

The inspector came back the next day and an exterminator had come and the bug problem was resolved.  Zaxby's was allowed to open back up that morning before lunch.

Silver Star Chinese Restaurant on Blanding Boulevard was also closed for the night because of roaches. The inspector found nine live roaches inside the refrigerator.  They were crawling in the rubber gasket that seals the fridge. There were also dead roaches in the same location.

The restaurant had to throw out chicken and eggs rolls because it was left out to cool overnight.  The inspector actually came back three hours later and felt like the situation was resolved and Silver Star opened them back up that same day.

Finally, Piccadilly Cafeteria on South University Boulevard was closed because raw sewage according to the report.  The inspector wrote there was black water on the cook line floor.

The manager told the inspector the problem was a clogged drain and a plumber was on the way. The inspector shut Piccadilly down for the afternoon but it was back open less than two hours later after the problem was fixed.
