Two restaurants temporarily shut down because of roaches

Restaurant Report Card

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Roaches shut down a fast food restaurant for a few hours in St. Augustine. The manager also had to throw out food that could get customers sick.
It happened at the Krystal on US 1 in St. Augustine.  It was on the radar last week, targeted for an inspection after a customer complained. The inspector did find Roaches in several places in the kitchen. The bugs were by the drink concentrate, and under the milk shake machine. The manager also had to throw out hot dogs and chicken because they were checked at a temperature that wasn't safe. The inspector did come back six hours later and the roaches had been exterminated - and the serious problems were resolved and Krystal was able to open back up.

Benito's Italian Café and Pizzeria on Philips Highway was also forced to shut down for part of the day last week because of bugs.  Ten live roaches were found underneath a table in the kitchen. The inspector wrote the operator was trying to vacuum the roaches up during the inspection. They also found roach excrement between the soda fountain, salad preparation cooler, and several other places. The inspector did come back that same day to see if the operator was able to exterminate appropriately. There were fewer roaches but they were still there so they kept them closed until that next morning. In a third inspection at ten in the morning Benito's Italian Café was able to open back up.

I talked with one of the managers at Benito's and she showed me receipts that totaled nearly 400 dollars in pest control in less than two weeks. She said they even changed exterminators because they didn't feel like the first company was doing a good job.
