GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Five men visiting Gainesville for a massive underground punk party were arrested after police said they beat an officer and it was all caught on tape.
Police said the video shows the Gainesville police officer Steve Jones was attacked by an angry mob of men and women who were seen punching and kicking him while he was trying to make an arrest.
Neighbors like Laura Predny said that's when things got crazy.
"It really quickly escalated into total chaos, and then all of a sudden all these cop cars, suddenly the whole police force was just coming into the neighborhood," Predny said.
Police said the beating started after they tried to break up a party on a street. They said people started leaving peacefully at first, but then things changed.
"You can pretty much pick out three guys, then two more, then two women come into the mix," said Lt. Keith Kameg, of the Gainesville Police Department.
The video is posted on YouTube.
"Somebody is trying to go for his Taser," Kameg said.
Kameg said the crowd erupted when Jones used a Taser on a suspect he was trying to handcuff.
Police said they are still looking for some of the attackers, including the two women.
"If you see the video, it's between six and eight people came out. We were able to arrest four," Kameg said. "What saved this officer was skill. He's a pretty big guy. If you watch the tape, about 40 seconds into the tape, you start hearing sirens."
Police got to the attack quickly because of the location. The officer was beaten about a quarter of a mile away from Gainesville police headquarters.
"Whatever you think, however you want to look at the situation, if you don't like an arrest, you don't have the right to go and get in the middle of it," Kameg said. "If you don't like it even more, and when an officer's down and has his back turned, you don't get to kick, punch."
