Salt spa opens at beach

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – A new spa in Jacksonville Beach claims it can help anyone who has asthma, congestion, eczema, psoriasis, and even lack of energy. All you have to do is sit still and breathe deep.

The Salt Spa is located on Third Street in Jacksonville Beach and boasts a room completely covered in pharmaceutical-grade salt. Although the treatments are nothing new, until a couple of months ago the closest salt cave was in Orlando.

Several people have already tried the treatments and say they see a difference.

Tammie Reid went in a few weeks ago when she was feeling sick.

"I had lots of mucus in the lungs, sinus problems. It was going on for three weeks," Reid said.

She stayed in the salt cave for around an hour -- a normal treatment.

"I was skeptical at first, so I was very surprised at how it worked," Reid said as she emerged from the cave. "It cured every one of my symptoms."

Salt Spa employee Lauren Riddick explained how the salt room works: "It's a breathing treatment so if you're in halotherapy, you're taking in the salt. It attaches in your lungs and helps to excrete naturally the mucus in your body."

Many doctors and wellness clinics recommend salt spas and caves, but only in addition to regular medications and treatments. They even say that people in good health can feel a difference.

Tammie Reid agrees. Even after her symptoms were gone, she kept coming to the Salt Spa for treatments.

"It's just like you're walking on air," Reid said. "You'll be amazed at how wonderful you feel."

Treatments in the salt therapy room run about 50 dollars each. For more information call 904-853-6670.  An official grand opening will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday. It' will be open to the public.
