A "suspicious device" found in a mailbox at a synagogue south of St. Augustine on Tuesday afternoon was an illegal commercial firework, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said a postal worker alerted them to the "device" at the Temple Bet Yam Synagogue in the 2000 block of Wildwood Drive just before 3 p.m. The area between State Road 207 and Treaty Park was closed to traffic and the bomb squad responded.
A Sheriff's Office robot was used to inspect the mailbox and neutralize any threat.
While there were no known treats to the synagogue, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were notified about the incident due to the nature of the location where the device was found. They have since been removed from the investigation.
