'Tis the season for package thefts
Neighbor on alert after witnessing package theft
Christmas shoppers across the world will be sending packages near and far this holiday season and one local woman says she caught a holiday crook in her neighborhood.
Megan Hall was sitting in her living room when she captured photos of a woman driving away after stealing a holiday delivery from her neighbor's front door. Hall said it happened in broad day light.
"She put the package underneath her jacket and started running to her car and got into her car and drove off," said Hall. "She didn't look like someone who would normally be a criminal."
The victim, Kathleen Crawford, didn't want to go on camera but told Channel 4 the woman got away with a $60 navigation system that her daughter had sent as an early Christmas gift from New York.
According to the US Postal Service, more than 2,000 people reported package thefts last year. FedEx said they have an outstanding record, but encourages people to require a signature upon delivery.
Channel 4 Crime Analyst Ken Jefferson said having deliveries sent to your office can help ward off seasonal grinches. He also said he recommends people connect with their neighbors to be on the lookout for package arrivals.
"You might want to check with your neighbors if they'll be home at the time of the delivery and arrange for them to accept the package," said Jefferson.
