1 dead, 1 hurt in St. Augustine house fire

St. Augustine's fire chief says downtown house was vacant, had no power

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A man is dead and a woman is in the burn unit at UF Shands in Gainesville after a house fire in downtown St. Augustine on Saturday night.

The fire happened just before 7:15 p.m. on St. Francis Street, in the city's historic district.

Fire rescue crews said after containing the flames they found the two victims inside. The man was already dead and CPR was performed on the woman until she could be airlifted to Gainesville.

St. Augustine's fire chief told News4Jax the house was vacant and had no power. He believes the victims are transients who were living inside. He said it's possible they may have started a fire to stay warm and that could have spread to the rest of the house.
