According to FHP, Deputy Christopher Crego, 31, was headed west responding to an emergency when his cruiser struck the right rear of a westbound van, causing it to overturn into a ditch. The driver of the van, 64-year-old Eduardo Pacheco, of Palm Coast, died at the scene.

The deputy was taken to Halifax Hospital with serious injuries to his head and face, according to the FHP report.

A Flagler County school bus going east on S.R. 100 had yielded to the approaching cruiser that had its lights and siren on, but the bus was hit by debris from the crash. While the windshield was cracked and the bus suffered other damage, no one on board was hurt.

The FHP report says charges are pending further investigation.

It's not known if anyone was injured in the rollover crash, also on S.R. 100, where the deputy was heading when he was involved in this accident.
