1 dead, 14 injured in school bus crash
Authorities say a boy was found dead aboard a school bus after a collision Monday with a semi-truck Monday afternoon in St. Lucie County.
Officials say 14 other students and the bus driver were injured in the crash near an elementary school near the intersection of Okeechobee Boulevard and Midway Road. Three of the injured students were airlifted to a trauma center. The others were taken for medical care in ambulances.
Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers reports the bus was carrying about 30 students.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the driver of the bus, 56-year-old Albert Hazen, turned left in front of a tractor-trailer that slammed into the side of the bus, causing the truck to overturn onto its left side and spin the bus about 180 degrees clockwise.
Hazen, who remains hospitalized, is expected to be charged.
Parents picked up uninjured students at the county's emergency operations center.
Grief counselors were at the school Tuesday morning
Meanwhile, there was a strong parental presence outside the school Tuesday morning and well-wishers are leaving flowers outside the front door.
"It could have been anybody's kid," parent Fay Benjamin said. "That's why my heart goes out to that family."
