JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

A driver of a speeding car lost control and the car went up in flames in Arlington early Sunday morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

It happened about 2:30 a.m. Sunday after an officer spotted a car traveling at a high rate of speed north Arlington Road near the intersection of Lillian Road.  As the officer tried to pull the speeding car over, the driver lost control. The vehicle went airborne, crashed into a wall and caught fire.

"The officers on scene tried to render aid, but the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames," said Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Chief Adam Brown.

The driver of the car, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"It's important to note that that person was driving at a high rate of speed and running red lights way before officers got involved in this whatsoever," Brown said.

Police are still investigating why the driver was speeding or if alcohol played a factor in the crash.   The intersection of Arlington and Lillian roads remained closed until about 7:30 a.m.

No other details were made available Sunday.
